Equipment Standards by Rule

Some equipment choices are dictated by the rules.  Your choices may be limited.

Helmet

White body, Red Visor, Red Jaw.

By rule, all helmets must be the same color or colors.
Helmet Decals are made for CASCADE helmets, but any of the ones below are acceptable:
Cascade CPX; white helmet, red jaw, red visor
Cascade – CPX (shown)

Brine - Oc-Loc™ buckles & memory foam liner
Stryke – economical protection
Riddell - inflatable liner & anti-concussive design

Decals are provided just before first home game.  By rule, only decals provided by the school or helmet manufacturer may be on your helmet.

Helmets with foam liners have a finite life.  They protect you by slowly breaking.  In time, they may not have enough energy absorbtion left and you may get hurt.

If your helmet is over two years old, get a new one

The two hundred dollars you spend on the helmet is cheaper than the thousands in hospital bills and lower SAT scores from too many concussions.  For example, which plot does Whinnie the Pooh have, Journey of Discovery or Triumph of the Underdog?  If you have to think more than three seconds about it, get a new helmet before its too late.

Uniforms and Numbers

Uniforms are purchased from the club.  When you join the club, you will be assigned a number that you will have for your entire career.  If you leave and rejoin, you keep your old number; when you graduate, you keep your uniform.

Incoming freshman are assigned numbers from the pool of unused numbers.  You may ask, but it is unusual if your requested number is available.  Seniors and Freshman usually have duplicate numbers.

Each player will purchase at least three jerseys when joining the team: home (white), away (red), and practice (reversable white/red); and one pair of red shorts.  Order a uniform larger than you need, you may grow over the next three years.  Freshmen will also receive a team hooded sweatshirt as part of their gear.  Varsity Players will be required to purchase a set of white shorts after being selected to the team.

Since you are playing for the name on the front, there will be no name on the back.

Mouthguard

Strapped mouthguards – By rule, they must be bright colors – no white, no clear.   It must be strapped so that if it falls out during a game, it is easily recovered.  Being caught without a mouthguard in place will result in loss of possession or 30 seconds man down -- not having one at all will result in your disqualification and the penalty.

Red tape is not an acceptable mouthguard.  Some concussions happen when the back teeth of your lower jaw slam into the back teeth of your upper jaw.  If you trim your mouthguard so that it does not cover your back teeth, you run the risk of a concussion.

Always have an extra mouthguard in your bag.  It’ s cheap insurance.

These are the better mouthguards:

Goalies

Gloves – By rule, the goalie may not wear hockey goalie gloves.

Shoulder Pads – By rule, shoulder pads are optional for the goalie.  However, the club would prefer all goalies wear shoulder protection.

Pants – A goalie may wear football pants with pads and shinguards, but must wear chest and throat protection.

Equipment Standards by Club Policy

As a club, we try to maintain consistency of uniform for all players.

Gloves

Red as primary color with Black as the second – Gloves do not have to match all players, so the club does not have a prefered glove.  Please keep in mind when you select your gloves that our club colors are red and white with black.

Gloves are a very important purchase, they have a big impact on your ability to maintain possession.  You have to try on the gloves and work a stick.   If you have big hands, you may find that the fingers on many lacrosse gloves are too short.  If you buy them from the web, make sure your supplier has a fair return policy.

Just in case you are clueless, yellow and blue would not be a wise choice.

Shoes & Socks

Socks – The club would prefer Low Cut/No Show and white in color.  If you’re cold, wear pants and not your sister’s soccer socks.

Shoes –  either white or black as a base.  However, by rule, they must be 1/2” or less cleats.  The club would prefer that your shoes have detachable cleats and that you plan to replace your cleats every two weeks.

While molded cleats are less expensive, they do not last an entire season nor do they grip well on the “quality” fields available for our play.  You can’t win the ball if you’re slipping and sliding and your opponent is not.  Replacing your cleats gives you a new pair of shoes for less than $7, which is a bargain.

Soccer, Football, or Lacrosse shoes are fine.  Baseball shoes are not permitted.

Underclothing

Compression/Sliding Shorts – Sliding or compression shorts should all be the same color, and for this club, they should be blackThese are an option.

Pants – Players selected to Varsity will purchase club pants and jackets.  These will be worn for warm-up, but not during the game.  For game play, you may only wear form fitting leggings/tights under your uniform shorts and these must be black.  A popular example is here.

Undershirts/Cold Weather Gear Undershirts should match your game jersey, so you should have a red and a white long sleeved shirt.  Popular shirts are this red or this white.

Crosse

Shafts – The club would prefer Silver or Red made from High Quality Aluminum, Carbon Fiber, or Titainium Alloy.  No wooden ones, please.   We don’t care if grandpa used it or if it was really cheap at the garage sale.

Nets & Shooting Strings – The club would prefer White nets and White strings.  If you want to get creative with shooting strings, restring your sisters’ or girlfriends’ crosse.

Heads – The club would prefer White heads with no dye or coloring.

Illegal Crosses – IF you bring an illegal crosse to the game, the referee can choose to inspect it and you can still earn a penalty even if it is not on the field.  Therefore, the club requests that ALL crosse be legal at all times.

Equipment Bag

The club would prefer use of the team equipment bag.  These are available through Lacrosse America.

Please be sure to leave your bag OPEN when you store it at home.  You should also wash your gear in a strong antibiotic solution (chlorine bleach works well) on a frequent basis.

Remember:  why would you put clean gear into a dirty bag?  Wash it too.

Colors

You may note that sometimes when shopping you may have a choice of CARDINAL RED or SCARLET.  Usually the choice of Scarlet is closer to the bright red which is the team color, Cardinal is usually a much darker red.  Other colors of red that may be offered are Crimson or Maroon.  Maroon is usually more purple, and would be noticed as being a different color.  If in doubt, please ask.  We are happy to help.
